They said Rome wasn't built in a day and same goes for this mechanic...Maybe I should have invested my time And money on a property as the time I've been waiting for this rebuild I could have made a fortune on property sales at present   at least I know the motor will be goin into a well tuned frame and suspension package now.

Always the way when using a top quality guru. My 69 Valiant Hardtop been in shop now 2.5 years and mate who owns the business hasn't yet started. Made the mistake of telling him I wasn't in any hurry :?

John, maybe you need a good panel beater that will have time for a project with that VE....or is it a VJ .?
Not many shops have time for the metalwork these days.

Close, but no cigar  It's a VF. I'm very anal and particular, everything has to be prefect (I blame the old man from being in the RAAF, only person I ever seen use a spirit level on every single paling whilst building a fence  )

Not too fussed anyway, I know it's in good hands as owner of the shop is a mate and used to specialise in hot rod & harley custom spray jobs but now mainly does insurance work. My hardtop and another XA GT he has in the shop are afterwork projects  Anyway I don't want to hijak this thread further, just appears as though the best pro's always seem to circulate via word of mouth, and yes you must wait in line :-({|=

After 3months of waiting for John Coonan ,he has had the spare head I have for the last month with only the springs taken off so far, so I've now elected to rebuild the bottom end myself with the help and guidence of Rod . By the time I finish that in a month or two I'm hoping he will have my head completed... Time for a bulk order on Carrillo Rods as Brett needs new Rods also so if anyone needs some the more the cheaper as they are a one off build as they dont keep them in stock...

Hey cobba you sure they're a one off build? Team Show & Go in South Aus says they have them in stock for $398 a piece. I put mine off when we had kiddy health problems earlier in the year after making the enquiry. However, If they are a one off I'd be in a group buy. I'll check with Team Show & Go tomorrow and let you know how I go.

Hi , has anyone installed these valves in combination with a JE 868 piston kit ?
I am finally in the process of fitting these , but I am afraid the pistons have to be modified because of the valve pockets being to small for the bigger valves (not enough valve to piston clearance)

I'm really surprised to hear that you are having clearance issues. I skimmed my head by 0.035" and had no valve to piston problems. I used +1.00 mm Trx pistons and a std Yamaha head gasket.

Timing the cams in is a little fiddly and time consuming and easy to get wrong. If you do get it wrong a piston clouting an open valve is a very real possibility.

I'd be inclined to check and double check the timing using a large engine degree wheel and a dial test indicator. If you are getting contact stop and check why. I had contact whilst timing my cams because the chain had jumped over one of the sprockets #-o .

A dry build to measure and check whilst building an engine is invaluable.

Good luck with it, I'm sure you'll sort it.

Sorry I can't answer your question specifically as I used different pistons to you :(

Mark.

Thanks for answering , I'm not that worried about horizontal clearance (not checked it yet) but for the radial , the pocket space for the valves on the JE piston is quite deep and for instance the intake pocket is 26,4 mm in diameter while the bigger intake valve is 27 mm (opposed to the original 26) this is going to touch and destroy i'm afraid .
Off course this is something that can be solved , but I was wondering if there where more of you who came across this problem .

This only accounts for the combination of JE pistons and the bigger valves.
Sanddune51 has original pistons, which are concaved on top.
And the pockets are wider (than strictly necessary) too.
See here for example:
Image

The top of the JE pistons are round (higher in the middle).
The pockets seem to be the exact size of the original valves.

Misterdimwiddy has the JE pistons, but not the bigger valves.

Took a look at my stuff and yes, I think this is going to be a problem.
Mostly for the middle inlet valve:

Does anyone have the diameters of the larger valves???

I don't have the valves or the head at present ( :x :x ) to check them against the JE and Ross pistons I have.
The balancer can deal with any that may need to be machined out..
I agree with you Mark, it's benificial to have a dry rebuild to start and check all clearances beforehand and investing in a timing wheel and slotting the cam sprockets to get the timing exactly where you want it to suit the desired rpm/ output gains the motors being built to produce.
Valve timing being out just a few degrees can potentually rob you of all that work you put into to gain a little more.
Bit like if you grew your hands on your ankles and feet on your wrists. Sure you may have 2 hands and 2 feet but there sure was a timing issue involved there...
Not a good way to finally reach that 4 minute mile.... Let alone pick your nose
